Hymn 360: Come thou fount of every blessing

Tune: Everton, with Intro.

1. Come, thou fount of every blessing
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy never ceasing
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious measure,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mountain top I'll treasure
signs of God's unchanging love.

2. Here I place mine Ebenezer
hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.

3. O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
take my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.

Robert Robinson (1735 - 90)

Prayer

Father as we join together on this special day, we seek to act in obedience to your word which instructs us to remember the Sabbath day by keeping it Holy. May we be blessed by the presence of Your Holy Spirit and inspired to come before You with sincerity of heart and mind. Your love for us is beyond measure and whatever words we offer they seem inadequate to give expression to the love and gratitude that we desire to bring before You. But Lord our thanks come from lives that are filled with worship, praise and adoration in recognition of Your boundless grace and mercy towards us and the whole of creation.

Forgive us that our expressions of faith are not always consistent with the lives we lead and please help us to rise above the temptations we face in the world that You have placed us. Help us not to deceive ourselves with thoughts above our station and may we have honesty sufficient to recognise, admit and confess our shortcomings in true repentance with a determination to listen to Your voice and act in obedience to Your will in the coming days.

(Take a few quiet moments to make your own personal confession to God)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Thank you, Lord, for the assurance of Your forgiveness and may we share together in our act of worship strengthened and equipped to fulfil Your call upon our lives. In Jesus name. Amen

Lord's Prayer

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
In earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

Readings:

Ecclesiastes 3: 1 - 11

3 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
9 What do workers gain from their toil?
10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

John 2: 1 - 11

Cana wedding

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Sermon

I wonder what it was that first gave you a desire to go to church. going into churchWas it the thought of meeting with other people, just getting out of the house for change or was it a much deeper spiritual experience? Whatever it was, hopefully there is now a real wish to meet with Jesus in an act of worship and praise. Of course, it is unusual to have to do so in the form of a written service but wherever you are at this moment the Lord Jesus Christ is present with you in the form of His Holy Spirit. In Johns gospel, as indeed in many other parts of the bible, there is illuminating evidence of who Jesus is, what He does and the extent of influence he can have upon our lives when we make ourselves available to him.

The Lords first miracle took place at a wedding in Cana as we were reminded from our bible reading and is a story with which we are probably quite familiar but it was indeed an amazing miracle of transformation. Until the coming of Jesus Jewish religion was based on legalistic traditions taken from the Ten Commandments. A series of do's and don'ts that had been elaborated on until it was virtually impossible to fulfil the conditions as they were presented. The coming of Jesus was like a breath of fresh air and this first miracle was symbolic of much that was to follow. Mary would have been fully aware of the exceptional nature of her son and she encourages the servants to fill the water jars. It must have seemed like a ridiculous thing that the servants were being asked to do and sometimes God encourages us to do things, the purpose for which we have difficulty in understanding. It is at that point that we have to trust our heavenly father confident in the fact that He knows best as will be confirmed at some stage through our obedience.

The six water jars were of 20-30 gallons capacity and they were normally used for ceremonial washing which is quite appropriate for the transformation that was about to take place but there was quite a celebration in the offing. Water into wine is consistent with the transformation referred to by the apostle Paul when he writes about being dead to sin and alive in Christ or in writing to to the Corinthians expressing the view that anyone in Christ is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come.

Life is full of changes; childhood to adulthood, single to married which in itself can be something of a culture shock, active to slowing down and the changing of water into wine was equally dramatic. What was also noticeable was that it was not the cheap run of the mill kind that was on offer but the very best. Unfortunately for many people Christianity is more like water than wine or even at the very best something cheap and disappointing. Our faith in Christ is not intended to be a poor substitute for eating, drinking and making merry but is about a transformation that opens the way for the very best in life that is available for all who would wish to share in the promises of God.

Now it doesn't mean that we have to be blackguards before and saints afterwards and it doesn't necessarily mean that a dramatic instantaneous change will take place but in order to be partakers of all that is available to us there will need to be a transformation. Subsequent to the wedding at Cana as recorded in Johns gospel Jesus met with the highly respected Pharisee called Nicodemus and challenges him to be born again. To give him credit Nicodemus was curious enough to seek out Jesus, probably a little fearful of what others might think of him, so he came at night. I doubt very much that he anticipated the response that he got but his later involvement with the recovery of the body of Jesus suggests that what was said significantly impacted upon him.

In normal life from being childlike we become mature, accept responsibilities and often move into parenthood and so the cycle continues. There is intended to be a similar progression within the Christian faith from the new life that is on offer. The need to be born again stems from the failure of one man in a garden or as a friend of mine used to say it was not the apple on the tree which caused the problem but the pair on the ground. Sin is a natural part of life but the new birth about which Jesus spoke is the beginning of the transforming work that he wants to do in each of our lives. It is also the reason why he left the security of heaven, not only to give us life, but to give us life to the full. Press a button on a computer game when things are not working out and you can just begin again. If we get it wrong in our walk with Christ we can repent, confess our sins and begin again it is as simple as that. Forgiveness is guaranteed.

I don't know about you but when I look around the world today and see the problems that are needing to be addressed it can be discouraging even despairing knowing that whatever legislation governments introduce they cannot change the hearts of people. Encouragement comes when I reflect on the character and nature of God who is able to do great and glorious things and offers everyone, no matter how bad or good they may think themselves to be, a fresh start. He extends an invitation to be born again, to be transformed and to bring hope when all seems to be hopeless. We, who belong to the church of Christ, are privileged in being entrusted with this knowledge and given the responsibility of sharing what we know to be true. If we fail in our duty the world suffers. Therefore may our faithful, loving God help us in our pursuit of His will as we work for the transformation of this His world?

Prayer

Thank you, father, for this incredible creation that you have entrusted to our care. A universe which stretches our minds beyond human understanding and a natural world of such beauty and intricacy that so often takes our breath away. Help us and people of all nationalities to take more seriously the responsibilities we share in caring for our planet. We pray that as politicians meet to discuss and address the consequences of climate change there will be a spirit of grace and compromise that will enable substantial progress to be made in dealing with the issues.

We realise that we are beneficiaries of so many good things that come from Your generous love for us and ask that we and all people will not take Your goodness for granted. Help us to recognise and give thanks for answered prayers and give to us all an appreciation of the fact that You are more than willing to meet our material, physical and spiritual needs As we pray for our homes, our families and our church may we not be found neglectful or lacking in faith as we come before You. Bless, guide and help us as we strive to do your will.

In a world of such beauty it seems sad that sin has played a part in destroying what you made to be perfect and we ask for your help in overcoming all that would be a hindrance to our stewardship of Your creation. The pandemic continues to give us cause for concern, not only in our country but across the world and especially in poorer countries where there are insufficient resources to conduct a comprehensive vaccination program. Father inspire leaders to address these issues with a compassion that will cause them to act in ways that will truly make a difference. Please protect and help those working in hospitals and care homes that their endeavours will help to limit the number of fatalities. Bring comfort to those who are mourning the loss of loved ones and may Your church be effective in introducing people in need to Jesus in a confident message of hope.

Lord we are troubled by the violence that is occurring in many places and concerned for those who have been driven from their homes and ask that you will bless and be with them. We also pray for Christians who are being abused and persecuted for no other reason than their allegiance to You and seek for them Your blessing and protection.

Gracious God the needs of the world are challenging and sometimes we are overwhelmed by the enormity of our responsibilities in prayer. Please give to us vision and confidence in Your amazing power to do great and wonderful things. May the concerns of our hearts be a source of blessing to all for whom we pray as we come before asking and trusting in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Hymn 433: O Thou who camest from above

Tune: Hereford, with Intro.

1. O Thou, who camest from above
the pure celestial fire to impart,
kindle a flame of sacred love
on the mean altar of my heart.

2. There let it for thy glory burn,
with inextinguishable blaze;
and trembling to its source return
in humble prayer and fervent praise.

3. Jesus, confirm my heart's desire,
to work, and speak, and think for thee;
still let me guard the holy fire,
and still stir up thy gift in me;

4. Ready for all thy perfect will,
my acts of faith and love repeat;
till death thy endless mercies seal,
and make my sacrifice complete.

Charles Wesley (1707-1788
